Minister of Water and Environment Engineer Tawfiq al-Sharjabi discussed Monday, via visual communication technology, with the delegation of the United Nations Human Settlements Program (UN-Habitat), headed by the organization's director in Yemen Muslim Kazemi the climate change adaptation project in the Tuban Delta in Lahj Governorate, funded by the Adaptation Fund.
During the meeting, which included the Director of the Organization's Office in Aden Mohammed Aidaroos and the International Director of the Project Samer Weber, the national importance of the project as the first project funded by the Adaptation Fund in Yemen was discussed, and what it represents as a strategic step to enhance the confidence of international funds in the executive capabilities of the Yemeni government, in addition to being a national model for water resources management and adaptation to climate change in one of the most fragile regions, which allows building on it to expand future interventions in other regions.
The meeting also discussed the importance of adhering to the highest technical specifications in implementing construction and engineering activities, taking into account the principles of environmental sustainability and ease of operation and maintenance and allowing the possibility of replicating the experience in other regions.
Minister al-Sharjabi praised the continued cooperation with the Human Settlements Programme in implementing water and environment projects, expressing the Ministry's aspiration for more future partnerships.
He stressed the Ministry's commitment to providing all necessary facilities to ensure the smooth implementation of the project and achieve its development goals.
The two parties confirmed the role of the project's steering committee in ensuring transparency and accountability, preparing an annual plan to be agreed upon with the ministry and the management committee,l.
They also confirmed importance of submitting periodic reports on the implementation stages and strengthening the monitoring, evaluation and learning system to track impact and results at the community and water resources levels.
