ADEN - SABA
The Undersecretary of the Ministry of Fisheries for Fish Production and Marketing Ghazi Lahmar held a virtual meeting with officials from the French Embassy in Yemen to discuss ways to enhance joint cooperation in the fisheries sector.
The meeting, which included the embassy advisor Steven Sander and bilateral relations officer Syl Lozie, reviewed the state of the fisheries sector in Yemen and the damages inflicted upon it due to the Houthi militia's coup against the state, climate change, the halt of research programs, and the weakness of marine monitoring and inspection operations related to fishing practices.
It also addressed the cessation of fishing investments, including industrial fishing in the high seas and Yemen's economic waters.
Undersecretary Ghazi emphasized the efforts made by the ministry in recent years to revitalize this vital sector by activating the agreements and protocols previously approved by Yemen and mobilizing funding to rehabilitate landing centers, fishing ports, and fish quality monitoring laboratories.
He also mentioned the preparation of agreements to open investment opportunities in industrial fishing in Yemen's territorial waters, stressing the need for Yemen to benefit from French expertise and funding to restore the fishing sector's infrastructure.
For their part, the French embassy officials confirmed the French government's readiness to support Yemen in several areas of the fisheries sector, highlighting the importance of strengthening the partnership between the two sides to achieve common goals.
