Aden (Saba) – Rights Radar has released a report on violations committed against press freedom in Yemen entitled “Yemen: Suppressing Voices”, ranking the Houthi-Saleh militias first with regard to committing crimes against journalists in Yemen during 2016.
The report issued on World Press Freedom Day dealt with issues of violations made against press freedom and freedom of expressions from mid-2014 until the end of the first quarter of 2017.
The report states that 19 professional journalists working in the media were killed in Yemen in 2015 and 2016, of whom eight were killed in 2015 and 11 in 2016, including seven killed by the bullets and rockets of the Houthi and Saleh militias.
Rights Radar, a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) that monitors, promotes and defends human rights in the Arab world , cited that 22 journalists and professionals working in the media remain in detention centers, including one detained by AQAP militants and a further 21 detained in Houthi and Saleh prisons.
The report highlights how the freedom of the press in Yemen faced its worst time in the years of 2015 and 2016. Press in Yemen is stained with blood, susceptible to abuse, killing, suppression, and death sentences. Detained journalists in Yemen are subjected to the worst forms of torture and face death sentences by the Houthis and Saleh forces in Sana’a.
It further includes a brief presentation of the most prominent cases of killings, kidnappings, arrests and trials. Amongst these violations was the issuing of a death sentence against the prominent journalist Yahya Abdul-Raqeeb al-Jubaihi
